Basic X-Band Questions Answered Here:
What is X-Band? Compex2 X-Band is a non-line-of-sight fixed wireless technology that delivers high speed Internet to Silverton. Fixed wireless means that it has an antenna at your place that talks to an antenna at our place. Then you have high speed internet. It is like DSL or Cable modem only better! And no cheesy hold music when you need help!
Why X-band? Compex2 is Silverton’s leading tech company. With our integration into the medical and professional community we have enjoyed all that the Silverton area has given to us. In 2004 when we formed a partnership with Cisco Systems we realized the potential to better the areas internet. We want Silverton to be the best little high tech town with an at home feel! That’s X-band!
Where are the antennas? We have multiple repeater locations throughout the Silverton area, with more coming every day. A quick look at the X-Band Map will give you an idea of the current areas of service. Also look below at the “How to get started” for more info.
Does this mean no wires to my computers? Can I roam around the House? No, X-Band is a fixed wireless Internet service. Your connection would have an antenna on your location with a fixed wire into your home or office. This wire would then connect to your computer, router, etc. However, you could add consumer grade wireless equipment (such as a wireless router) in conjunction with X-band to add the wireless features in your building. This equipment and installation is separate from your X-band connection. You can do this yourself or have a professional (such as Comp*ex2) do it for you after your X-band connection is setup.
DSL, Cable Modem, Or X-Band? If the question was X-band or dial up there would need to be no explanation. But the service between the high speed connections are different also. If you have an existing high speed connection and are happy with it we recommend that you stay with it. However, what X-band is able to provide over the other is this:
How will the antenna be installed? Every installation will be different. We will evaluate your situation and provide you with specifics on the installation for your approval. All antennas are outdoors and low profile. Click here to see some pictures of installed antennas. A single cable from the antenna will need to be ran into the building within 200’. You need to have written permission from your landlord if you are not the owner of the building.
Can my service be disrupted by objects or weather? X-band uses amplified antennas with a max operating range of 10 miles unobstructed. However some obstruction can be penetrated without much degradation. We will not install the antenna if the location does not meet the prerequisites for installation to guarantee a good connection.
Is it true I can connect my home to my office with X-band? (VLAN’S) Yes, X-bands network technology allows the creation of a VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network). This means that if you set your home up with X-band and your office you can then ask a VLAN be created. A VLAN is only for you and secure. It allows you to share your files, printers, and resources between the multiple connections at a rate of 54mbps!
Is X-band symmetrical internet (the same speed uploading and downloading)? Yes, X-band is a symmetrical internet connection, unlike standard DSL and cable.
How many computers can I connect to the X-band service? The antenna comes out with one Ethernet jack that can connect to one computer or to a network router. From that point up to you can connect as many computers as you would like. Those computers would all share the same network speed from that antenna to the internet. If you would like to increase the internet speeds to your antenna for multiple computers that can be done as an additional charge. How long does it take to get setup with X-band? That is a variable depending on weather, technicians, equipment and your pre-qualified location. We will try to give you the most accurate answer to that question at the time of your inquiry.
What type of contract agreement would I have to sign? X-band is a month-to-month contract. Some special promotions may require you to stay connected for a certain period of time to receive a discounted rate. After you pre-qualify we will ask you to sign our month-to-month agreement so we can start your service. We do require at least a 30 days notice prior to disconnecting.
I need help with my computer or it might be sick ? X-band installation and service covers the point up to your internet connection on the antennas connection. If you computer has a virus or you need networking help installing network equipment you can hire our technicians at our normal shop rate.
What happens if I do not want X-band service anymore? All you need to do is provide us with at least 30 days notice. If you have fulfilled all of your contract for any promotions there will be no charges. Simply let us know. Since our network is a you buy equipment you can keep the equipment or ask us about our by back availability.
What happens if I move? First step is to let us know the new location and see if you can get the service at the new location. If you can you are welcome to install the service at the new location.
